Do UK ants and woodlice chew wood?
Question:I recently found ants and woodlice in my living room and a pile of, what looks like, sawdust. Do either of these chew wood or could it be something else?
Answers:
Woodlice, also known as slaters, do feed on dead plants, but not on furniture wood , or structures, probably because of various chemicals used in the stages of wood preparation, although they do live in damp places as they have gills of a sort, so you might have a problem with dampness in that particular place. Ants do not eat wood, although Carpenter Ants do tunnel through it, they are normally found in the USA, and are extremely large compared to other ants and have wings. However, I would check for signs of infestation ,just in case there is an ant colony inside your house. Most likely, it was just a few stray ants that found their way inside, but have a look, near sinks and in the bathroom for ants foraging for water, as well as looking at windows, as they are likely to congregate there. It must be something else, possibly woodworm.
Good luck : )
I think woodlice do.. woodworm definetely!
i don't think that they usually chew treated wood, like furniture. - they usually go for things like old bark / rotten timber.
have a look at the wood where u found the sawdust... are there tiny holes in the wood ? making it look like somone has pricked some areas with a needle ? if so, then u have probably got woodworm in your furniture. there are sites on the internet that advertise treatments for woodworm.
