What will give the most heat? Open fire with Wood or Coal, or mix?

Question:I have an open fire, currently burning wood (small seasoned logs). But what will give the most heat?

After the kindling had crackled and flamed, and the outer of the log charred, there just isn't a lot of heat given off.

What's the best solution? More wood, or just coal, or a mix.

Answers:
Coal gives the most heat, but wood smells much nicer. A mix gives medium heat and the best of both worlds. Bank the fire down with slack to stop the coal burning off too quickly and to keep the heat in the fire.

"What will give the most heat? Open fire with Wood or Coal,"

Directly related to the type of wood or coal, the construction of the fire box and its flue and ash pit.
There are more calories in coal, so in theory there should be more heat , in practice however there is nothing like a real wood log fire !!
Coal gives off more heat. However most of the heat from any open fire goes straight up the chimney. A wood burning stove is a lot more energy efficient.
I normally use kindling to get the fire going then add coal but I also like to burn turf as it tends to give off quite a lot of heat and smells quite nice too I find that logs tend to smoulder more and not have off as high a heat. Coal is find but try mixing a bit of turf with it and see how you get on :-)
