Opening up a fireplace?

Question:I'm looking to open up the old fireplace in our bedroom, its been bricked up. It will not be used, it will be purely decorative we have a nice surround etc.

Think I'll get a tradesman in to do it, but who specialises in this sort of thing? Builder? Chimney Sweep?

Any advice?

Answers:
builder. And a good one with references.

Builder, you only need a sweep if you are going to use it.
open it up and line it with plasterboard, well easy and you'll save yourself ££££
A general builder should be able to sort you out. Put a ventilation cap on the chimney pot to keep the flue ventilated
You can do this yourself. Just purchase a cold chisel and a lump hammer and start knocking out carefully.
There are two types of trademan who can do this
1 - Bricky
2 Plasterer.
I would go with the 2nd if I were you as they are the ones who will make it look all pretty and give it the finish.
The bricky will do good brickwork but miss out on the plastering.
Have fun
