Well, you can kill the scout ants all you want, but if you don't get the nest, you'll continue to have problems. You need to kill the scouts while getting rid of the trail, but as I mentioned that is just the first part. Vacuuming up the ants or wiping them up is a good way to get rid of them. Wiping gets rid of the trail as well. If you can, find the hole in the wall or wherever that they are coming in (if you can find it) and plug it with tape or caulking or something! Also make sure you don't leave food out and you'll need to have clean counters.
The one thing I do NOT suggest, is using ant sprays. Ant sprays are nice and toxic to humans (esp children) and pets (we have the same neurotransmitters as ants do) and all they do is temporarily rid the house of a few ants. It can be gratifying, but can be a poor health choice.
Baits on the other hand, are very small amounts of pesticide and the ants take it back to the nest, thereby destroying the nest (yay!). You may need to be a bit more patient and let the ants take the bait (not fun to have ants wandering around, but necessary). Less toxicity, less mess, more effective, baits are the way to go!
I just read in a report I was reviewing that 90% of urban pyrethroids (a common insecticide) in California are used on Argentine ants. Scary! Also, realize that you may not completely get rid of ALL of your ants, but at least you can get them down to manageable levels (hurray!).
For more lovely ideas that are nice and non- or least-toxic (that's where I got a lot of this information for my job) go to:

Note: It is idiocy to spray outside your building as the ants will come on in. Also, generally outside your house is a nice concrete driveway or sidewalk, and pesticides will wash right off that and into your stormdrains and into your local waterways. That is unfortunately part of my job, to help figure out how to clean up creeks from urban pollution. DO NOT SPRAY OUTSIDE.
if you find out let me know we get that same problem every summer
there'r several cheap insect destructive products on sale in super markets. You may need to use them more than once. I had the same problem but it took me almost 2 years to be totally rid of them.
this worked great for me, boric acid, sugar and water absorbed into a piece of sponge, look it up on the Internet, it kills the entire colleny. Good luck bud
Spray the ant killer stuff OUTSIDE all around the base of your house and use thoise ant spikes in the yard. That will keep them down a little. They are of course attracted to the water in the pipes and follow those into your house
I have heard putting vinegar in the places where they are will help. I have never done that. We had them really bad one time and I used Bengal ant powder stuff. It is farely expensive but it worked great. Only had to use it once and it worked.
i had ants in my apartment in san deigo andi kept a clean place and i had hundreds if not more. i went online and looked and trid a product and i used it a few times and it worked. i forgot where i bought it but i went to the store and picked it up. i included a link of the product hope it works.
I had a huge carpenter ant problem early in spring this year. I bought a bait called Advance carpenter ant bait from the internet. This stuff took about two weeks for results too finally show but boy did it kill a huge amount of hidden ants in my walls and I have yet to see a single ant. It also kills many other types of ants.Good luck.
try wiping your counters with bleach. they hate walking on it .dust a little boric acid powder along edges and corners. hardware stores .have the powder.
They will be gone within 2 days if : Use diazanon pellets around the foundation of your home outside. Inside, use Terro liquid. Put a few drops on small pieces of cardboard. They love the sweet, sticky stuff and take it back to their nest. Good luck.
I can tell you from experience that this will work!! There are sprays out there that are non-toxic despite what some people will tell you. Ortho Home Defense is good, but you could also try Spectracide, I know for a fact that is it effective. Both however, can be sprayed around kids and pets as it is no longer a threat to anyone other than bugs after it dries. You do have to steer clear of it while it is wet. Make sure you spray around the windows inside and out, around all the baseboards, in your cabinets ( but make sure you do not soak your pots and pans) and behind your refrigerator and trash cans...pretty much everywhere around where food is. You will see results in a couple days
There's a product made by Victor called Poison-free that's non-toxic to people and pets--- it's made with mint oil. The one I have is called ant-killer, but they make stuff for wasps, roaches, etc. You might also try cinnamon.
