If it damages your mattress to sit on it, what do you think sleeping on it will do? Of course it wont hurt it. Think of children and how they love to bounce on their beds.
Yes and no. If you have a high quality mattress, sitting on the edge isn't going to affect it. If you have an average quality mattress and weigh more than about 180 lbs, over time, the springs won't spring back completely leaving what looks like a dent. If you have a poor quality mattress, pretty much guaranteed that it will happen unless you are a child.

There are new, average mattresses that are actually reinforced on the edges for just this reason. Consider getting one of those in the future, especially if you just have no room for chairs in your bedroom. I don't think I've ever seen a child's mattress dented, they just don't weigh enough even if they bounce. I'd say I noticed it on my mattress about a year ago (buying a new mattress at the end of the month) and I have had mine about 8 years.
Nope!!!!!
If you are overweight and habitually sit at the edge in the same spot - yes you will. Otherwise no.
Yes, it does damage the edges of the mattress over time. It's best to use a chair in the bedroom for changing clothes, etc. I bought a beautiful pillow-top mattress a couple years ago and the salesman mentioned that prolonged sitting will break down the edges. Best to use the mattress for lying down activities, for the majority. :)
Doesn't matter if it does or doesn't. If your mom has a bad hip and this is causing her some stress just find somewhere else to sit. It comes down to what do you value the most, your mom or the fact that you want to sit there.
If you sit on the edges of the mattress, no matter how high in quality, it will damage it. Just sitting up in bed to watch TV or read won't damage the mattress.
yes...

The primary advantage of memory foam mattress pad is comfort and support provided at a far lower price than that of memory foam mattress. You position the mattress pad on your bed, especially the one having the sturdiest support. To break in the pad, sleep directly above the foam, instead of the cover sheet. This will hasten the process of breaking in and should be done slowly over a period of time.
