I have a combi microwave and it works well. I recommend buying the largest for which you have space as grilling tends to need more space than your average microwave meal; eg three or four steaks laid out on the grill. You are also less likely to burn your fingers if there is space to move the grill when you want to inspect food or turn it.

Do you mean the conventional microwave oven, with the tray for grilling? I think so. I have just bought one. It's great. I grill chicken, salmon, etc. I hardly use my microwave anymore. I love it. I think it's also healthier in a way. I use it to toast, and bake small portions. I like it.
We have a Panasonic Inverter Slimline Combi (1000W) and it gets hammered every day by two adults and two kids. The grill is brill and the settings easy and varied. Price is about mid range but we think its worth paying a little bit more than a cheepy. Hope this helps.
