I will be moving to a basement apt and it is mildewy, will a dehumidifier work better than an air purifier? My?
Question:my daughter is allergic to mold
Answers:
Not a good idea with your daughter being allergic to mold, but if you have no choice, then use both a dehumidifier and an air purifier.
The dehumidifier will remove moisture from the air. It has a tank that collects the moisture which you will have to dump out occasionally as it gets full.
The air purifier will removed mold and other allergens from the air. Definitely get one with a fan to circulate the cleaned air.
I also recommend painting the walls with Sta-Dri or similar product. It seals the walls and keeps wetness from coming in. If drywall is already up, then it won't be as good as applying straight to brick, but anything is better than nothing. You can then paint over the sealer like any primer paint.
If you don't have much money to be spending on all this, then at least get the dehumidifier. It can help prevent the growth of mold by removing the source.
A dehumidifier is essential; you could try the air purifier at the same time.
Check to see if there's mildew on the walls. If there is, they & the floors need to be cleaned with bleach - ask at a hardware store.
But if there's a permanent source of moisture, the mildew could come back, and may affect your daughter. - When my son was little, we lived on the ground floor and he had a bad cough all year round. It went away when we moved to a tenth floor apt!
If your daughter is allergic to mold...DO NOT move into that home please...As for your dehumidifier, all it does is remove the moisture from the air and walls etc.. your air purifier will work ok but not to the standard of helping your child. If your going to consider living there i would consider having a professional come to your new home and check for mold/mildew levels and moisture levels before you decide to move in. It will be a lot cheaper than the doctor bills you will have to face.
DEFINITELY run the dehumidifier...it is essential. i live in bermuda where it is very humid, and i am also allergic to mold. in the winter we run the dehumidifier b/c it tends to give off heat; but in the summer the A/C generally takes the moisture out of the air, allowing less of a chance for mold to grow.
good luck!
Oh, if she has allergies, you want to use both. The dehumidifier will cut down on teh humidity but the purifier will pick up alergens. Make sure you select one that circulates the air, though
Try both, dehumidifier and air purifier, dehumidifier take care of moisture, air purifier take care of molds. Or try 1 by 1, there are a lot of dehumidifiers out there, some good some bad, same as air purifier, but I do know an air purifier that's good at molds, it removes airborne allergens and stuff. it's call Rabbit Air BioGP (http://www.rabbitair.com).
