How much should I expect to pay (roughly) for a mover?
Question:I live in Auburn, AL. I am needed to move out of my 1 bedroom apartment into a duplex and I also need to move a storage unit into the same duplex. I am going to do all the packing, just need to movers to relocate everything. I am trying to call around for estimates, i just dont want to be ripped since I do not have loads of money. I dont even know how a moving company charges...by the hour? by the day? by the truck load?

I recently hired movers to move my small one-bedroom apartment a half mile. It cost about $500. Two weeks later I hired movers for my friend, this time I sought some advice from my auctioneer brother-in-law, he referred me to a local place (rather than the large national chain I had used) and his similar move was $350 (I am including the tips in these prices). It pays to shop around. The local one I used was listed with 123movers.com. You might try that for an estimate. As to how they charged, they both had a fee for showing up (one called it a fuel fee, the other mentioned it covered insurance, etc.) Both had an hourly fee based on how many workers were needed (one calculated that in 15 minute increments, the other was by the whole hour). Tipping was extra, however, I made it clear to the movers that showed up to do the work, that the less I spent hourly, the better their tip would be. (I'd rather give it to you than the company . . . )
Moving companies generally charge by the hour. I would get some quotes on their prices by checking the local telephone directory. Find the cheapest moving company in your area. Have everything packed up, so it will make it easier, and FASTER!
If its a local move by the hour. If its a long distance move it goes by weight. Usually aroung 5 to 10 grand.
When I moved, I just rented a moving truck & had a bunch of my friends help me. I had to put down a $150 deposit on the vehicle, which I did get back in the end. I used the truck for one day, and it cost me about $80 (I used Budget, and the cost was per day plus fees). So you can estimate that it will be slightly more if your having movers help you as well.
Good luck. Moving isn't fun. =(
set aside a couple hundred should be fine...question thou, don't have any friends around to help, maybe one with a pickup?
