Can a person take a start off a Rhubarb plant and get it to grow, elsewhere?

Question:My niece has a huge Rhubarb plant and I would like to get a start from it and grow my own, can this be done and how long would it be to get first cutting and bake with it?

Answers:
Get a root cutting. put it in water until you have new growth. Plant about the same depth as it was on the mother plant. You'll get a crop on the second year, but don't over-harvest. The larger the cutting you take, the soooner you will be able to harvest.

Rhubarb can be divided but it may take a year for it to get established and grow enough to use it for baking.
I've seen lots of people take starts from other plants and plant them, but I think each rhubarb needs at least a year of growth before you can eat it.
Dig up a piece. Plant it in full sun, at the depth it was, water well, leave it alone 'til next year and enjoy. My plant is 70 years old, and has gone to many, many homes. Just don't ever let it blossom.
