How to save power?

Question:I need some clever and creative ways to cut my power bill and become more green.

Answers:
It's hard to say not knowing where you live and in what climate, but here are some ideas.

-lighting: always be sure to turn off lighting when not inthe room or if it's not necessary. you could also try fluorescent lighting as they use less wattage and produce less heat. try to use day lighting as much as possible...if you can switch your schedule to be be awake during the light hours and asleep when it gets dark, that can help.

-HVAC: if you area is hot, try to not over cool it with AC units. If you like it at 68 degrees, try to deal at 74 degrees. Likewise with heating. If you can wear an extra layer of clothing rather than putting the heat on, do so.

-water: try to refrain from leaving the hot water run too much - take shorter showers or hand wash dishes quickly vs. using a dishwasher

-since our area is hot and humid, we try to keep the house dark during the day when we're not home and then open the curtains and such at night when we are. this will help with keeping the house cool because sun coming in creates a huge heat build-up

-if you're into home stuff, you should reseal your windows (to prevent conditioned air from leaving and unconditioned air from entering), or you could buy new, more efficient windows. If you have a couple of floors, you could set up a fan system to blw the hot air upward quicker and create more circulation in the house. You could consider different methods of power generation but they would be expensive (i.e. solar power panels).

I could probably think of some other ways, but see how that works for you.

1 drill a hole in the wall
2 pull wires from neighbours house
3 attach to your wires
4 sit back and get lower electric bills
keep it simple.
don't use the air conditioner.
don't run any unnecessary electrical devices, including: fans, lights, stove/oven, washer/dryer, TV, radio, computer, etc.
get a simple muscle powered generator like this one...

replace all your flashlights with ones like these...

consider switching to solar power or if you have the fortunate locations, water power.
insulate your house wall, attic, etc, anywhere heat can get in/out.
check for drafts around windows and seal.
walk/bike to work. or if you can, at least carpool.
buy foods from local farmer markets, hopefully they will not have used as much resources as large factory farms/grocery stores to produce/ship/store/display.
as in all things, do your own research, but this is a start.
I will tell this to anyone and everyone that will listen. Buy a Tank-less Hot Water system.---3 stage set-up. This will INSTANTLY save you $50 to $60 a month on water heating costs. In regular hot water tanks the water is constantly being heating to a certain temperature. Think about it.if you go on vacation for a week, that water is being heated whether you are there or not. When our water isn't being used, we have no gas heating anything. We have hot water "on-demand" and that is the only time it is heated. We never run out of hot water either. Be sure to buy the biggest 3-stage or 2 - stage unit they buy or it won't do laundry and showers at the same time. They are costly at first, but will pay for themselves inside of a year...I GUARANTEE IT!
