Water softener. Where is the water stored after it goes through the softener?

Question:My softener goes off once every 2 weeks. So where is the water stored during that time? When I need water it comes from wells in the city into my house into the hot water heater. This holds 30 gallons but I must use more than that in that peiod of time plus it gets replaced with new water. I'm totally confused on this subject.

Answers:
It is stored in your hot water heater and/or another storage medium. You probably dont use the 30 gallons all at one time. But if there is not another storage medium, then no, once that 30 is used, it's gone, unless you have an active treatment system that treats the hot water as it is dispensed from your heater. Try adjusting the intervals to once a week or every 3 days week

There are a lot of possibilities here so I'll just cover the more likely ones. Frequently only hot water is softened so this may be part of the answer. Most softeners work by adding salt to the water as it passes through and don't need to "go off". It is possible that you have a reverse osmosis unit, and what it does every once in a while is back flush to clean out the accumulations.
It softens the water as it passes throught the softener.
No storage is needed.
