How do i go about finding out who the previous occupants of a house were?

How previous do you mean? If you mean just a few years, the electoral rolls should be available at your local library, although there appears to be some information online. However, if you're looking at the history of the house and want to go further back, you can do this online by looking at the census. They've now put these on back to 1841. There sometimes is a charge, but it's really interesting - I found out that my house used to have a family of five and a maid living here, and the man of the house worked in a stable. Still can't work out how they all managed to fit in my little place!

try contacting the utility company or maybe ask the neighbors
well, the way you do it in the U.S is by the your county assessor... (example - Mojave county assessor) they all have a website you go to and you just type in your address and it giver all the owners, previous and past.
just wait for a letter to arrive with the previous occupants name on it, or ask the neighbours.
Go to your real astate agent and ask or if you want to do it online...try remax.com they might have something there or call the real astate agent that sold the house to you ask them if you could get the info.
If you have just moved in, the previous occupants may still (if they registered, which is supposed to be compulsory) be on the ELECTORAL REGISTER (it is updated in October).

These can give clues, such as the appearance of the house in photographs, or may directly mention notable occupants.
