Hanging white lights.. some fell in the pool.. now the main plug wont work?

Question:I've been in my backyard for a while hanging up white lights, and a strand of them fell in the pool.. which caused all of the other ones to go out. All of the lights work if I plug them into a socket inside, but the socket they were originally plugged into wont work anymore. What do I do now? Will the socket ever work again?

Answers:
Most outside electrical circuits, or those near water like in a kitchen or bath, have a GFI (ground fault indicator) which will trip if a electrical device comes in contact with water. Most of these have to be manually reset.

Look for a GFI receptacle with push buttons, and see if it has tripped (one of the buttons will be out). The GFI receptacle may not be physically near where you plugged the lights on (it may be on another outlet or even inside the house), but it will be on the same curcuit. To reset the GFI, press the button that has popped out.

Another place where GFI protection for the circuit may be is in your breaker panel. Some circuit breakers have GFI built in.

Check your panel and see if one of your breakers has tripped. Sometimes you have to look closely for many modern circuit breaker don't go all the way to the off position when they trip, but stop halfway. If so, turn off all electrical devices on that circuit and then try to reset it. Reset it by pushing it all the way to the OFF position first, then all the way to the ON position.

If you have a fuse panel, check the fuses to make sure one hasn't blown (look in the little window on the fuse - the little metal strip will have burned in two). If you find one blown, turn off all devices on the circuit like above and then replace the fuse with one of exactly the same type and amps.

All I can think of right now. Good luck!

You may have tripped a circuit breaker.

Go to the electrical panel and see if any of the switches are out of place. Reset them if so.

Try the plug again with something else that you know works--a lamp or something...

Good luck!
The socket may have gotten over loaded and burned its self out. In which case you will have place it with a new one.
you have tripped the circuit breaker go to your fuse board and turn it back on the socket will be fine
check for GFI outlet on circuit ,push reset button, but I'd bet you tripped the breaker .go to your electric panel and the one that's not on but half way between on and off push it to off than to on...your panel is usually mounted under the meter...Good luck
