What function does a box spring serve?

Question:I am thinking of building a bed frame that would essentially put the mattress on a platform with a sheet of plywood underneath. The boxspring is going to make the bed too high to get into.

Should I build shorter to keep the boxspring in use for the warranty, or does it even matter? It will still be a sturdy, level area for the mattress to sit on.

Answers:
The box springs contain "springs". This lends support to the mattress. Without them, the mattress will be firmer and perhaps more uncomfortable. As long as the mattress is fully supported by the board, you should have no problems.

I think the box spring is just for more support. I dont think it is really needed
