I don't have A/C what is the best way to cool my house down?
Question:It's too hot and I live in rental so I don't want to spend tons of money. Ideas?
Answers:
i don't have a/c either and live in a small house that get's cookin in the summer time. here are some things i do to keep myself & house cool:
shut off my computer unless it's extremely important. the fan on your computer contributes to the heat.
don't watch tv, it adds to the heat, again. it's so nice out why would i watch tv? :)
don't cook in your kitchen. use your microwave if anything. ordering in or going out is the best option, plus free a/c almost anywhere you go out!
use your fans to circulate air. in the morning when the sun first rises shut your windows, shut your blinds, start the fans if you'll be home. a cool pan of ice water in front of the fan can help sometimes.
at night when the outside temp gets to be lower than your inside temp, take your fans and have them blow OUT so all your hot air gets blown out the window. this one i read in the newspaper and has made my bedroom much much cooler at night.
take frequent quick 5 minute cold showers, it can help a lot and is really cheap!
freeze a bunch of water bottles ahead of time. they work great as "ice packs" when laying around and then turn into a refreshing drink.
i've heard of "freezing sheets" but never tried it so perhaps research that one...
hang in there! it was 108deg at my house near Seattle today so I am def. feeling it!!
Fans, ceiling fans, window fans with exhaust and intake. Put a fan in a window and have it on exhaust. In a window opposite that one, have it on intake. It should suck out the heat while drawing in some cool air. But, I'd get a/c. A small one in a window would be soooooo cool.
Keep you blinds/curtains closed if possible. And this may sound funny, but drink lots of cold beverages! It really helps.
