How can I stop hearing my neighbours ? (not their fault)?
Question:Help please ! I bought a mid-terraced town house 6 months ago, next door was empty (for sale), a couple of weeks ago somebody moved in and I found out to my horror I can now hear everything from next door ! Not that they are especially noisy, it's not their fault, but I can hear them brushing teeth, stirring milk in their cup, kids calling "mummy", their answer phone and so on, like in a cheap hotel ! (and I have 2 little kids myself so I don't live in silence !) The worst being their bathroom wall next to my baby's room, it feels we are sharing the same house, ...
I am also surprised as it has never been like this with my neighbours on the other side.
What should I do as it's not their fault ? Any ideas about what is causing this ? how to stop the noise ?
Answers:
I had to live with that. I could hear my nieghbors peeing upstairs.
Something that helps - a fan. Not a ceiling fan, but a fan that makes noise. It will really drown everything out.
I would also talk to your lanlord/condo association.
Their walls may not be up to insulation code -seriously.
Run a fan 24/7?!
That's a tough one...

Consider Moving
Insulation might be an answer, like wood paneling or some other material that would dampen the noise.
build thicker walls that should queit it down
You could either tear down the walls and put better insulation and/or sound deafening panels in
OR
You can wear something in or over your ears
OR
You can have a discussion with your neighbor and see if they have the same problem.
If you can hear them...they can hear you!
You may go to the Big Brother house with thouse naughty loud twins and the Victorie Backham wannabe Chanelle... I can't help hearing them...
you may want to invest in insulating that part of your house...perhaps they didn't do that when constructing...
otherwise, there isn't much that can be done... if it's just daily living that is so in your face, you will have to do something...what is going to happen when in fact they do get noisy..when they are having sex and your kids hear it? i mean..that is just a bit 2 close for comfort..
have you tried talking to your neighbor...if you are hearing them, i'm sure it's the same on their end...find out if there is a way you can split the cost and give each other the privacy you deserve...
good luck
I'm sure it goes both ways.
I have found that "carpet" on the ground and insultation IN the walls really help as well.
I highly recommend a "meet and greet' with the neighbor and see if you SHARE the same ventalation system, that is a major issue in multiteared homes.
Check out MichealHolligan.com for some handy improvements for "new houses" that you can use to make yours more sound proof.
Best wishes. Been there, done that.
I literally carpeted the bedroom walls and put tall wooden amories against them. Since I did not "own" my home. The couple next door was in "their" bed a lot more often and not sleeping, funny at first and then the novelity wore off.
Well I would go over there and ask if they can hear you. Just tell them " I want to make sure we aren't being noise excessive. Maybe if you feel comfortable you can tell them you can here everything they do. You could emphasize "everything".
Then I might talk to who you got the place from, see if they know who contracted it. Maybe they didn't insulation in between you and the "Noisy's " but did between you and the other home.
It seems like a lot of steps but someone has to know whats causing the ruckus.
If they only moved in a couple of weeks ago it may be that they still haven't got all the flooring down, or rooms decorated. That tends to make normal everyday noises seem louder in your home. There is a new tenant moving into the flat above me and I can hear every single thing he is doing! It wasn't like that with the family who moved out so I'm assuming it's because he hasn't settled in properly yet. Have a friendly chat with them and see if that is the case as you do state that you don't hear your other neighbours.
I have the same problem. Our bedroom is next to nextdoors bathroom. they have a god dam squeekt door which highly irritates me. I can hear them run a bath, have a piss, flush the loo.
put some cork boards on the ajasent walls adding any pictures and wall hangings will help. you may have to purchase a white noise machine.
Cork your walls where it is the worst. You can buy cork squares. This may help. Also, try putting heavy cushioned furniture close to the walls to absorb sound.
Or, you could talk to your neighbors, and say you are embarrassed but maybe you could come up with a mutual solution?
Maybe get an estimate or three, from a contractor, carpenter, and ask what it might cost to insulate or rebuild the walls.
Also, try some spray on insulation that can then be painted. Worse comes to worse, a layer of foam and re sheet rock.
I really empathize with you! I HATE noise from neighbors.
Move
you can sound proof the walls with acoustic foam or sempatap a material that reduce noise vary in expensive job
we had the same problem, you could change rooms or put some trees to block off the noise>
It could be the fact that next door they have wooden flloring which echo's a lot. If I was you you could soundproof your rooms.
To be honest i wouldnt say anything to them. People have to live. you must be standing with a glass to the wall.is it after midnight this problem? you sound like a twisty man are you in the house all day? get more hours at work!! let youre wife deal with it. And by the way babys sleep through hurricanes this cup of tea making crap is not gunna wake baby. Its sounds as if youre trying to rule the street and you havent been there 2 minutes. Start and think of how much trouble could become of youre moaning. try and live with it i say. You need something to think about?
