Can anyone help me with a swimming pool question? I have very couldy water!?
Question:Hi, I'd love some help. We have an 18 x 48, intex above ground pool with a filter system. Recently, I've noticed the water got very cloudy. I've checked all the chemical levels. We just filled it 2 weeks ago. I did the shock treatment twice, I've added clarifier, algecide & plenty of liquid chlorine...plus I also have a floater of the chlorine tablets. I changed the filter, & I've vacuumed every day this week. I've been running the filter for about 12 hours a day (I don't turst leaving it plugged in while we're @ work). We live in Ohio & the past few days we got significant amount of rain. I would love any suggestions that I haven't tried already. Thanks :)
Answers:
First of all, you should take a water sample to a pool supply store. Most test it for free. That will tell you the problem.
Cloudy water if a darker shade, may be unkelated metal. Products like "metal b gone" will clear that up. Put that in when filling is the best. Clearing it up is more difficult.
Otherwise, it sounds like you are doing the right thing, except, you may not be running the filter long enough to clear it up. After it clears, you can run it less.
Some other ideas from websites: "Cloudy swimming pool water can be the result of one of a number of factors.
The cloudy pool water could be caused by an excessive amount of dust or pollutants in the water.
High doses of pool chemicals such as calcium hypochlorite (unstabilised or shock chlorine) can cause a high salt level in the pool resulting in cloudy, milky pool water.
Milky pool water may also be from an excessively high stabiliser (cyanuric acid) level in the swimming pool.
If you have cloudy pool water, the first step is to determine the cause before attempting to solve the problem and clarify the pool water.
Happy swimming."
And from this website: http://www.wikihow.com/diagnose-and-clea...
Test the swimming pool water for Combined Chlorine, pH, Alkalinity and Calcium Hardness. The two areas that are most likely to cause cloudy pool water are the pH and the Calcium Hardness.
If the pool chemical levels are not within the following suggested ranges, adjust and run the pool filter system for 12-24 hours before re-testing. Free Chlorine: 1-3 ppm, pH: 7.2 – 7.6, Alkalinity: 80 – 120 ppm and Calcium Hardness: 200 – 350 ppm.
If all the pool chemical levels test in range, the cloudy pool water is caused by fine debris suspended in the pool water. You should backwash or clean your pool filter following the manufacturer’s instructions, and run the pool filter system continuously for 24 to 48 hours.
If the water conditions have not significantly improved you should add a clarifier pool chemical to the pool water to help your pool filter remove the fine debris from the water. Continue filtering for 12 to 24 hours.
If the water conditions have not significantly improved you should add a second dose of clarifier, or a stronger clarifier chemical and continue to run your filtration system.
Hope this does the trick and good luck.

I bet it is because of the rain. As soon as it quits raining shock your pool and then vacuum it. I live in the south and when it's very humid my pool will get cloudy. I use Aqua Chem shock 6 in 1. I use one or two bags at a time. Never more. I don't shock but about two times a week. My pool is 24 ft. across and 54 in. deep. Good luck.
from experience id just worry about the chlorine. we have a 27ft above ground pool and all we do is shock it once a week. this is what i want you to do... get your chlorine levels to where you want them and then add some stabilizer. this will keep the chlorine from evaporating from your pool in the sun. do not add anything else until you get your chlorine levels stable then add only stablizer you'll have to run your pump for a while after doing that try it and see how it works remember add nothing but stabilizer
To clear your pool you need to put a flocculant in it.
Flocculants make small particles join with each other to make bigger particles then sink to the bottom of the pool. When the suspended partials have all sunk the the bottom of the pool you vacuum the bottom of the pool to (waste). It's very important to make sure you turn your filter to Waste.
Once thats done, you need to balance your pool again.
Sea Clear is one brand you can buy.

Allot of good answers and one "very" long one. I would suggest running your pool filter for 24hrs after adding clarifier. I have an inground pool and it works for me!
Run it while you are at work.no harm done!
When mine stays cloudy after vacuuming and scrubbing and adjusting the chems, I usually buy new sand for the filter. The pool experts tell me sand should be good for at least two seasons, but for me it isn't so. It is cheap enough to buy new every year, and, there are different grades of sand. I use #20 crystal grade for the same size pool.
