For the vertical stud (2x4), builder A use solid wood stud and builder B use Finger Joints stud.?
Question:We want to know which one is better so we can decide between buider A vs builder B for our house purchase.
Answers:
finger joint studs are stronger and straiter. but i would not let this determin who i hire. ask for reference and go and look at some of there work. a little time spent now will save lots of headache (and money later)
Peter is right- finger jointed lumber is straighter, at least as strong, is marginally better for the environment.
If this is the only difference between the two builders, they are almost clones of one another... I would ask both of them to defend their point of view.
I would not choose a builder based on this... get references and check them. There are fake references out there- so ask about how the reference client is related to the builder. Look at their other work and ask the other customers about their experiences. Contact the Better Business Bureau and inquire about complaints.
If the companies have changed names often, or the references don't seem solid, be wary.
A good company will be comfortable with being investigated closely- I love it when my clients find out all about me...
As a builder, I find it interesting at best that your decision is based on the relevance of your question. Solid studs are typically more apt to bend and twist, especially in direct sunlight. Finger-joint studs are usually straighter but are dependent upon the glue in the joints to hold them together. A mold & mildew contractor told me recently that mold feeds on that particular glue, but that fact rarely comes into consideration. In my opinion, both products are viable options and aren't a major consideration in selecting a builder.
