Centipede in East Texas...?
Question:I killed two, what I believe to be, centipedes today. They were in my tortoises outdoor enclosure under his watering pool. I was looking online to try to find what type of centipedes they are and some information about them. My tortoise is very small and I am concerned that they might "attack" him. Do you know what type of centipedes are common in the east texas area?
It looked like it had "scales" on its back. They were an orangish/red color. About 2.5 to 3 inches long.
When I found them they were curled up in the dirt under the watering pool.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Answers:
centipedes do bite. their bite is not harmful enough to be worried about and centipedes do rarely bite and you should have no problem with the tortoises and the centipedes.
these bugs usually like damp areas which is why they are by your watering pool. to take care of them you can use borax (sprinkle some around the watering pool) or use an electric bug away unit that uses emits sounds to keep earwigs and ants away as well as centipedes.
you are lucky though. i live in western pa and we get the centipedes that have a million legs and are sometimes about 7 inches long! they love to eat mold so sometimes it is hard to get rid of them around watery areas.
