lava rocks are a thing of the past why you ask because they hold all kinds of yummy bacteria almost every grill sold today is equipt with vapoizor bars they help add flavor to your food buy burning off most of the grease and adding smoke to your cooking without using smoke wood and it is a lot cleaner than the old nasty lava rocks
Turn the grill on high for a couple of hours.
You can tell if its doing any good if the rocks get a grey ash on them.
Hose off the ash w/ plain water & do it again if necessary.
Probably easier to get new ones.
