Why do people put metal stars on thier houses?
Question:Many people have a metal five-pointed star nailed to the outside of thier houses. Typically the star is painted in coordinating colors with the house. I was wondering what this star was meant to symbolize, if anything.
The two people I've already asked both had different answers, one said "Family member in the service", the other said, "Jewish". Does anyone know? Do you have a star on your house?
Answers:
I guess it depends on where you live and where you see the stars. The 5 pointed star is not Jewish - that's a 6 pointed star.
The 5 pointed star started in the Revolutionary War and was a symbol of defiance. It did indeed stand that there was a male member of the household that was serving AGAINST the crown. This, however, did not last long since the British troops would summarily burn these houses down.
It was widely used in the South during the Civil War. There would be multiple stars depending on the number of family members serving. Some houses had one, some had 5.
In the south you will find that historical homes have kept their stars. However, most newer homes do not adorn stars for the sake of decoration. In the north, homes will adorn stars for decoration because they think it has a Colonial feel to it.
I have a star on my house but i live in Texas. Mine just is the star of Texas
You see a lot of that here in Texas!
But that's just Texas pride!!
Well, I can tell you this, the typical five star you see is definately not a Jewish star. A 6 pointed star (two flipped triangles) is a Jewish star. Five points are not Jewish. Hope that helps.
