if you seriously want to know, they are called apartments because they are partitioned off from whole homes, so that the person living in them 'lives apart' rather than sharing common space, like a boarder. This was once a big status thing, when most single men lived as boarders, and most single women lived either at home or in club type dorms.
an 'apartment' was both upscale, and a littel racy... like 'penthouse' would be now.
