Seasoning Cookware?
Question:I was wondering how to season cookware, especially Cast Iron? Can you season cast Aluminum? If so how?
Answers:
Cast Iron! I love it!! Best skillets and fry pans ever made! The best way to season a new or rusted IRON pan or pot. Wash the pans (Deep Brilloing to get out the production oils) or media blast them clean and dry. (Media blast is a shop term for a production process where the material is subjected to a high pressure air stream containing abrasive materials).
Coat the iron with a heavy cooking oil like CRISCO. I mean dunk it in the stuff. Bake the ironware at 375 in the oven for an hour or so. Do not take it out of the oven hot! Shut off the oven and wait. It'll be a day at least! The Iron gets so hot it turns black with the oil. Wash with mild detergant and the pans are ready for any cooking you can do. Never scrub off the black coating! The pan is clean when there's nothing stuck to it and not much will!
aluminum doesnt need seasoning but cast iron does. you wipe it very carefully with peanut or veggie oil (has to be oil with high flash point). then you let it heat till the oil is absorbed. this makes the somewhat more stick proof. it has to be done periodically because cooking and washing will remove the oil.
Take some vegtable oil and coat the whole pan...top bottom everything. Put it in the oven at 350 for an hour. Then you can wipe off the excess..do not wash it with detergent or in the dishwasher because it will ruin all your progress. After you do the initial seasoning, the best thing to do is to cook something really greasy like pork chops or fry cornbread.
