When should you pick walnuts?
Question:We have a walnut tree in our back yard and want to know when to pick them?
Answers:
i don't know. why the hell don't you look it up in google?! how about when you want an excuse to go outside in the yard to spy on your cheating wife who is doin' your neighbor bill?? i think that that would be a fine time to go out and pick your damn nuts.
Harvest all types of nuts as soon as they are ready. Late harvesting reduces crop volume, lowers nut quality, and shortens storage life. In California, harvest timing variessomewhat with location. The earliest harvest generally occurs in the southern SanJoaquin Valley, followed by the central San Joaquin Valley, the Sacramento Valley, and finally the coastal valleys. An interval of about seven days separates the begin-ning dates for harvest in each succeeding district
In Missouri, they start to fall off in late Sept. and that's when they are ready. Take the raw nuts to a local huller to get to the actual nut inside. Or, if you don't have a ton, you can leave them in the driveway and run over them a few times to help remove the hulls. We picked up walnuts every year as kids and got $4 per hundred pounds after hulling. In the early days of our marraige, my wife and kids and I would pick up walnuts to help pay the utilities for the winter. We were broke, but those were really great debt-free days with great memories and stories to tell. Happy hulling.
There were a lot of walnut trees around where we used to live and the kids and I had a ball collecting walnuts.
They are ready to harvest when the green hull splits open and the walnuts start falling out. Be careful when you touch the green hull. The juice makes your fingers turn brown. It doesn't hurt you, but it doesn't look nice.
