How can i get rid of these weird, hovering flies in my backyard?
Question:I have a ton of hovering flies that tend to swarm around the side of my house. I clean up after my dogs meticulously and the flies don't fly near where they go to the bathroom anyway. i believe it may be something in my neighbors yard; but they only seem to hang in my car port area. Nothing but concrete and a wood fence on my propery in that area. It could be the shade that is offered between the houses; not sure. I've tried the fly trap bags; but they don't seem to like those. These don't seem to behave like house flies because they only hover around in circles in this area. Any ideas what type of fly they might be? What can i do to get rid of them? Thanks

We have them, too, but they are gnats. Very irritating and they do seem to congregate in shaded areas. I've been spraying the hovering circle of them with either eucalyptus or citrus oil mixed with water to disperse the crowd. It works for enough time to enjoy the patio for a quiet dinner, but they still keep coming back. I also burn those giant citronella inscense sticks and candle jars while we are out there. It creates a barrier so the helicopter bugs stay outside, but even that doesn't get rid of them for long.
My parents have always used this thing I think is called "The Fly Bag." Not really sure of the name...anyways, you hang it on a tree or fence and mix the contents of the bag with water. You leave it hanging and it takes a couple of days to ferment. I must admit it smells awful, but it attracts flies like crazy. Beleive me...you will have no problem with flies. Just found out it is called the Big Bag Fly Trap!
why do you want to get rid of them? Do they bite? We live in the country and sometimes there is a horde of wee flies that hover about head high. They don't seem to bother anything and maybe they are eating something that is bothersome. I just ignore them and go about my business, and I hope they are doing the same with me if I'm an annoyance to them. Unless they are fruit flies. If this is the case take a glass of wine and spread saran wrap tight over top. Take a fork and poke a few holes in top. Leave it there for a week or two and see if that fixes them. They go into the glass and can't get out and drown.
I saw something on TV recently about using pesticide-free products to get rid of annoying bugs in the garden. Apparently you can buy this stuff at the hardward store that you sprinkle on the grass - it's a fragrant mix of lemongrass and other herbs. It's supposed to keep the bugs away. Sorry, I don't know the name of it, but maybe your local hardware store has something similar.
Don't mean to sound silly but you should make sure they aren't termites swarming. After that try some lime on the ground. Be sure make sure that the plants in the area can tolerate that as it changes the ph of the soil.
YES the Fly Bag works......very cheap safe and very easy!
