Answers:
Unless they are an inconvenience best left strictly alone, when disturbed in a confined space can be lethal, If you must get rid of them call in the experts, wasps do not return to the same nest next season

i had a nest on my roof once. i just called the council, and they sent someone round. he sprayed some stuff on it, and they soon died out.
you can call environmental health, they will get rid of it for you, good luck.
I think you actually have to get proffesionals round to deal with it. If you are in the UK phone the council, and they will handle it.
get a baseball bat, hit it a few times then run like a darky
Wait until it gets cold this winter and knock the nest down. If they are causing a big problem call an exterminator. It will cost you but at least you aren't up on a ladder being stug by wasps. Unlike other bees they can sting repeatedly and they are aggressive.
Got a good garden hose with a jet spray type nozzle? If you do, wait until after dark. That way all wasps will be inside sleeping. Run the hose so you get the water as cold as possible. Then spray the hell out of the nest, making sure to knock it down. Not only will this knock down the nest but it should also kill a fair amount of those nasty old wasps. If there are escapees, you will notice them hanging around looking for their nest, but they will eventually leave and try another location.
As has been said before, get in touch with your council, where I live there is a small charge for treatment of wasp or bee infestation, there may be in you area, but it is better to have it done properly
In the early evening when the wasp are in the nest, smoke the underside/bottom of the nest for about a minute or so then knock it down.
I used a semi-tight rolled newspaper and sprayed the flame with water to create a lot of smoke. Afterwards, I put the paper and the nest in water overnight before throwing both away.
Also, spray the spot where the nest was to avoid them from re-building a new nest.
get a ladder and climb up to the nest with shorts and a t-shirt
on and smash it with a baseball or criket bat
Call Orkin Pest Control, Inexpensive and AWESOME

http://www.orkin.com/
get a pest control officer out but if you can live with tehm they will leave the nest in oct / nov and won't return to it next year
If you spray it yourself. Make sure you protect yourself from inhaling the the spray (usually a white fine powder) because it is a poison. The wasps will get it on their bodies and fly off and die. The nest will be anything from the size of a tennis ball to the size of a large football made of a paper like structure with all the compartments for the young wasps. It will just stay there unless you can move it. After a day or so if it has been sprayed properly. There should be no more wasps there.
