Will pulled weeds re-root within a compost bin?
Question:I've been gardening and pulling alot of weeds, then throwing them into a compost bin. I'm afraid they're going to re-root and start growing again, but this time in the bin. Is this possible?
Answers:
Yes, weeds will re-root in your compost bin if you do not keep the internal temperature high enough. Turn your compost regularly, but not too often. This keeps it aerated (necessary for successful composting), but still 'cooking' at a reasonably high temperature (this aids in the breakdown of plant material and 'burns' weeds out)
If you throw weeds in your compost bin with dirt still attached
they may try to grow, but what does it matter you got them isolated and as long as you keep puting more on top they should smother out and die..
Let the weeds dry out on the sidewalk then throw them in the bin. Unless they have seeds they wont reroot. After all dead is dead and the dead can't come back to life.
Not only possible but probable and DO! Years ago I went thru the thing of creating compost bins, one a starter and the companion finished/storage bin. At first I used food scraps but found it drew rats and other vermin, so I stopped that.
But the weeds seem to grow, faster, bigger, healthier than the vegetables I planted. LOL! I haven't planted a garden in years but the compost area still produces the most healthy weeds you can imagine. Wonder do they give prizes for healthy weeds?
However I did find that my dirt in the garden area and the compost is so rich and soft that it is easy to just pull up the biggest weeds.
I have even tried covering the whole area with weed control "carpet" and tarps on top of that but they still grow thru, just slower.
Some sure can under the right circumstances, But worse than that are all the seeds attached to the weeds waiting for soil to grow in your bin will do nicely for them!
