How do you get rid of a skunk without calling animal control?
Question:There's a skunk living right by my house and we can't stand the smell anymore, but we don't want to call any animal services. What can I do to get rid of it?

kill it with a .22 rifle it should kill it instantly and will leave little mess
really we have a possum in our back yard
If Mr. Skunk is living by your house, chances are he's not alone. You may have no choice but to call your local humane society or animal control service to relocate your skunk family. Animal control officers have humane ways of relocating wild and exotic animals.
the most popular urban legend for this is to spread moth balls around,they're cheap and the skunks are supposed to hate the smell,doesn't cost much if it doesn't work.

Leave bags of mothballs, or cloth bags with ammonia soaked rags inside, where you suspect a skunk may be lurking Use a long string and tie the string outside the opening, so you can easily pull the bag up. To find out if you have successfully gotten rid of the skunk, leave a layer of clay litter around the area that was inhabited, and then check daily for footprints.

Skunks are beneficial contrary to most peoples belief. They only spray (stink) when agravated.
If you do not bother them they will not spray; they may stamp their front feet if you startle them (that is their 1st warning). Their 2nd warning is when they are facing you and do a handstand with their rear and tail over their head (this is the spray position). Just stop, wait and move away slowly. Skunks do not like to spray; that is their last line of defense.
They can be friendly, but they are wild animals (Bush Kitties).
The skunk(s) will help you keep the grubs, bugs, etc under control.
Find who or what is bothering the skunk and have it or them removed.
