well...in the wild,use smoke. if its for you, used off lotion. a lot of choices can be made.
I carry a stick of incense with me in the summer. A white dish filled with water and placed in the yard attracts all insects and kills them. You can add Joy liquid detergent too- just a drop.

As bad as this sounds, I suggest Bats. I live close to a lake and mosquitos, biting flys, and gnats are bad at times, but my bats keep them in check naturally! The bats dont bother humans or animals, only bugs. Bat houses with directions on location and mounting proceedures can be purchased at most home improvment stores.
try bleach on the filter let dry and put back togeather they wont come near the smell
