How to save on electricity?

Question:how do i save on electricity? i live in texas and our bill is OUTRAGEOUS!!

Answers:
If you live in Teas, I can't see trying to live without your air conditioner.

I learned when I lived in Nevada, that you really need air. Get the room comfortable, and turn the air temp up a bit. Like, 78 degrees or so. Don't turn it off if you leave during the day, as it will have to run double hard to cool the air when you come home.

Using drapes with insulated backings can help. Keep windows and drapes shut when the sun is shining on that side of the house.

Turn off TV, radios, lights, etc when you're not there. Maybe leave one low wattage light on as a security light.

dont plug in many things and dot leave the tv on all the time and the fans
Open the Electricity file and from the FILE MENU Hit Save or use Save As if you need to save as a different file:)
Don't turn on the lights when the sun is out and don't run the fan let your windows up when you at home or in the day time
turn lights off when you are not using them.and anything, comp tv, radio etc.use those new kinds of light bulbs...if you have electric heat try to use it less frequently and on lower settings.
dont use air conditioning. switch to halogen type light bulbs. use a clothes line instead of a dryer. dont use a dishwasher. leave lights off. leave tv off. turn off computer and monitor when not in use. if you have an electric hot water heater change the setting so it does not heat the water as hot.
turn off the lights, don't use the air conditioner
using your appliances after 7pm can help, cut down on lights and the a/c, call your electricity provider and ask to be put on a program that saves you 20% on your electric bill.

good luck
Two things and they both have heating elements --- Coffee machines and a water bed heater- we used to leave the coffee on all day and with the water bed heater we had the highest bills around. I took an amp probe to all the appliances and our coffee machine used 20 times as much as our 25 year old chest freezer. Our new coffee machine shuts off after half hour and no more water bed and our electric usage went way down.
start by getting the light bulbs that save power the new kind.
next make sure when you turn something off like the computer it is really off not on stand by .
wash in warm or cold water .
watch less TV a TV really gobbles up power.
use a clothes line.
turn down the water heater.
in the summer get insulated drapes for the windows and keep some of them shut so the heat does not come in and so you use less ac.
look into geothermal ac that is the kind that runs down under ground to cool the air.
use a toaster oven for small stuff .
turn off lights when not in use or even get a motion detector on the switch so it turns off auto when no movement in room for a set time.
make sure your dryer vent is clean . lint trap too
again use a clothes line.
see about more insulation for some of the house of all of it so you don't have to use so much ac.
fluorescent lamps (low mercury), unplug non essential low voltage transformers, new insulation, new windows, high seer ac unit, open the new windows instead of ac when you can...turn it off, that goes for everything your not using. turn water heater down a little (electric)... lots of ways
if you have an electric stove - match the burner size to the pan you are using- small pan on big burner may boil more quickly but wastes energy.Air out your house- it heats better and cools better with fresh air. Clean dryer vents frequently.Use a dishwasher and only run when it is full. Get dimmer switches for everything possible. Vacuum heat vents frequently to keep lint away. Do not block vents with furniture.Towel dry your hair longer and use the dryer less. Vacuum coils iunder refrigerator and clean pan if there is one.
Just how outrageous is your bill? more than 100.00?
keep your thermostat at 78 during the summer and 68 in the winter, unplug appliances from the wall. (there is still an current even if the appliance is turned off) wash and dry at night, use the dishwasher at night. use the new energy efficient light bulbs.

Use common sense. You will find your answers.

For me if I live in Texas I would plant trees for shade because summer is hot. Or live in a two story building and sleep on the first floor during the summer. Use attic fans instead of air conditioner or window fan in case you live in an apartment. Naked during very hot summer also helps. Wet towels wrap around ice and cover oneself. Use portable quartze heater during cold winter in one room. Use natural gas to cook. Turn off anything not in use.

Install solar panels also helps to payoff in the future. Initially you might be spending money but overtime you win. Solar panels are also dropping in price and Texas is hot and good for solar power. Good luck.
