Which type of wood router would I need to be able to bore a hole in a door in order to fit a deadbolt lock?
Question:I need it to be able to bore a neat square hole about 5 inches deep. Which tool would I need?

You don't need a router, just an auger bit the width of the lock, and a couple of sharp chisels, auger out a series of holes to match the lock size, then square off with the chisel(s).

First buy your desired deadbolt set and inside the package are the blueprint and plans as to how to install the lock set.Also it tells you exactly what tools you need. But before you go to the store, open the door and measure the thickness of it,write it down so you dont forget it,then while looking at the sets in the store it tells you which lock set will work for you by the thickness of your door.Then look for your tool for cutting the door.
You don't need a router, you need a spade bit for your power drill. I take it you're fitting a 'Chubb'-type dead bolt with a splined key, If so, the hole doesn't have to be square, just big enough to fit the lock.
Use what is called a flat drill. Ask for it at a DIY store and then you will see what it is. You use this to drill out the door and usually need to do it in a line in about 4 positions. You then use a wood chisel and mallet to take out and shape the hole you have made to fit the lock's hidden part. Keep drill straight or you could come out at the side of the door. Once you have seen the flat drill you will understand what I am trying to describe.
Holesaws and spadebits are usually used for installing locks. Have to question a square hole and the 5" of depth though.
They make a regular kit for this purpase and I believe all you need is a power drill. It has a template with it and a special hole saw bit.
