Getting rid of ants?
Question:I have a compost heap that is now swarming with black ants. Will they leave it and start coming into my house? Do I try to get rid of them or leave them?
Answers:
Firstly .you do not have a compost heap. You have a heap. Compost needs water, lots of water, lots and lots of water. to aid in the rotting process. Yours is way too dry, because ants will live in it instead of earthworms.
So take a pitchfork and flip the pile and let the corner sprinkler run in the heap all day long. If it doesn't rain during the week, sprinkler again. The ants will go.
Go to the local zoo and borrow one of the anteaters
pop some petrol down and light it if the fire doesnt kill them the petrol will mind those gas pipes though
Put a chalk line around your door, ants won't cross it, believe it or not.
It's part of the degeneration process, you can get some powder to keep them from getting to close to your house, compost heaps should be as far away from your and you neighbors buildings as possible.
if you put some bay leaves in the compost i heard that they can not live near them
ant powder costs about £1 , don't use it tho unless u see them around your door step etc as it can be harmful for dogs
try getting some sevin dust
Ants won't cross any white powder (unless it's sugar!)
But seriously, Nippon Ant Gel works WONDERS!
It's a slow release poison that tastes sweet to the ants, this means that they feed on it, and then tell their friends.
before you know it the whole colony has fed on it, and it's reached the queen. A few days later, they all drop dead!
Fantastic stuff!
if your compost bin is far enough away from the house, you shouldn't have a problem? mine is the same, absolutely swarming with them? they help break down all your waste vegetable peelings etc...and there brilliant to watch...you'll be fine mate ..leave em to it? check what the doctor says....http://www.wascot.org.uk/html/compost_do...
