Natural way to discourage mold?
Question:I live in a sub-tropical area in Australia and everytime we receive alot of rain, the walls and ceiling in my house start growing black mold.
I air out the house for hours everyday by opening all the windows, but the mold problem is persisting and I have to scrub down all the walls and celings every few months with bleach and hot water, it's starting to get beyond a joke.
Are their any natural and non-toxic methods that can discourage the growth of mold on paint?
I've heard that tea-tree oil can help, but I haven't tried it out yet as I'm worried about paint discolouration.
Any ideas?
Answers:
We use Simple Green. It is an anti-fungal cleaner/de-greaser that will not dis-color your paint. It is a non-corrosive chemical cleaner. It should have an 800 number on the back of the bottle if you want to ask questions.
That anti-mold additive for paint is great too!
Tea tree oil is a marvel of nature, but is strong and possibly corrosive for your walls. (Not sure).
Get a dehumidifier in the room, set it to high for the first few days.
The mold will come back as long as the humidity persists
mold can cause very bad lung illnesses
the spores or spikes float about in the air and get breathed in
and do all kinds of nasty things to the respiratory system
you shouldnt really disturb it at all, without first wearing a proper mask and gloves and a chemical solution for that particular strain of mold

Get a whole house de-humidifier system and run ti frequently. The mold is growing because of the moisture in the air in your climate. Getting rid of the moisture will reduce or eliminate the mold.
You can also try painting with a mildew resistant paint. Several brands are marketed as bathroom paint. They contain additive chemicals to resist the growth of mold and mildew.
