Are mothballs in vacuum safe?
Question:Someone told us to put mothballs in our vacuum to help take care of our flea problem (I guess it suffocates them with it). But on the mothball box, it says that they are toxic and not to inhale them, and when we vacuum, the entire apartment smells like mothballs. Is this safe for us?
We opened the windows, but I don't want to risk it if it's bad.
Thanks!

The chemical is called paradichlorobenzene, and it is not good for your health to breathe it. It's also what some very cheap urinal and toilet cakes are made of. Any time the smell concentrates, it's unhealthy for you. There was a news story about a mother who got her baby old clothes that had been in moth balls for years. It had so permeated the clothes, that the woman's baby was sickly and actually failing to thrive. It was because of the mothballs.
Don't put them in the vacuum bag. Dispose of them and put in a new bag. I am glad that you asked someone besides the "someone" who gave you this very very bad advice.
Yepp Its Safe
DO NOT DO THIS
they are big moths if you can see their balls
if u have dogs put an egg and garlic salt in there food
not likely but you won't die. I am asian and not to be sterotypical but some of our clothes smell like mothballs because theres a lot of in China. Just open your windows you'll be fine. If your afraid of other vermains getting in . Get some screens.
go to walmart or a pet store and get the carpet fresh stuff that is for fleas..it works it kills all kinds of bugs..we used it for fire ants...you can put it down and as you vacuum it will stay in the bag..i wouldn't use the moth balls because they smell so bad and will give you a headache after long periods of smelling it
No it isn't safe and not only that, the odor isn't pleasant.
Use flea granules in the nap of your carpet. These can be applied once a year and remain active for the whole year. They are safe and effective.
Here's some advice of how to get rid of flea's naturally:

MY GRANDMA USES THEM ALL HER LIFE!!
MOTHBALLS ARE NOT FOR FLEES
MOTHBALLS ARE FOR THE THING THAT EATS YOUR CLOTHES!!!
JUST DONT OVER DU-IT.IT IS TOXIC TO A POINT.
IF YOU USE A HOLE BAG YOU GOING TO SUFFOCATE FROM ITS STRONG SMELL!
JUST USE 3-4 SMALL ONES!
PS.I DONT UNDERSTAND WAY YOU POUT THEM IN THE VACUUM???
Mothballs will only kill the fleas that are vacuumed up in the vacuum cleaner. It is Safe, but can become smelly. The cheapest way to get rid of fleas is to use salt on your carpets, put it down at night and vacuum up in the morning, do this for 2 weeks and the fleas(and their eggs) will be gone for good.
You can also leave the salt down for the 2 weeks if you use extra fine salt.
