I like fabric, vinyl looks kinda tacky, plus it you can't get rid of those fold creases in it from when it was in the package.. I have both though. Make sure if you go with fabric to get the liner shower curtain too (they're only like 3 bucks)
You need the plastic liner, but definitely go with a fabric curtain. I have a cool terry-like one that I got on sale at the Pottery Barn outlet.
the basic answer is that you'll need a vinyl curtain no matter what. regular fabric is not water repellant, so you'll end up with a wet curtain after every shower.
what matters is whether or not you want to just have a decorative vinyl curtain-- or if you have the vinyl on the inside (where the water is) and a pretty fabric curtain on the outside. some fabric curtains are almost sheer, so you can choose a colored vinyl curtain to accent the colors on the fabric.
