Question:we live in the country, and are being terrorized by raccoons. i am afraid to leave my dogs outside at night, for fear they will hurt my dogs. we have lived in this house for over 30 years, and they have never bothered us like this before. more and more come each night - i've seen them out the window tearing up my yard, my gardens, my plants, tearing up my birdhouses and feeders. please tell me how to get rid of them without killing them, if that's possible. thank you.

Call your county animal control department. They can set humane traps throughout your property to trap them, then come by the next day or so to remove them from your property. If they cannot help you, call your local gaming and wildlife commission. They may be able to help you get rid of the raccoons, and relocate them to a wildlife reserve or any wooded area a safe distance from human civilization.
You will have to remove all sources of food for about a year. No garden, feed dogs inside, etc
An animal will not move on from a source of food.
Their hungry, so you have two choices: feed them or remove anything to encourage their foraging.
1. At the perimeter leave scraps for them, seeds, crumbs, old bread, marshmallows(they have a sweet tooth), meat scraps and they will leave the garden alone!
2. Spread the perimeter with a lot of moth balls and garlic(don't like the smell) and they should leave the area.
My visitors are hand fed cookies and the like and NEVER both me or my cats. They just sit and wait for something then leave.
