Make sure and put steel wool around any openings to the outside of your home (around pipes going into the floor). They cannot chew thru this to get inside. If you don't have animals, put poison outside underneath the floor as well. Baited traps still work best if they get into the house--try peanut butter instead of cheese.
in the long run you will save money and anguish by calling in a professional pest exterminator
good luck I can't think of anything worse
Not trying to be completely ignorant here, but if you have the money you need to move. Rats are the #1 animal that carry diseases.
Depending on how bad your situation is and what options you have available, you could get a cat, a small dog bred to kill rats (like a rat terrier), or alternately, use rat poison (in areas that rats might like to hide out in) and rat traps (big versions of mouse traps), or consult a professional exterminator and have them provide you with ways or techniques to rat proof or at least discourage the rats from entering your home.
Glue traps are cruel but effective. Put them where housepets and family members won't blunder into them.
You can mix warfarin-containing rat poison with peanut butter...put that in locations away from the traps.
Do not put lethal traps or glue traps outside...you'll catch birds and small mammals.
go get some cats from local shelter and keep them outdoors. cats are more happy outside anyways as long as they have claws and its not freezing cold they will have lots of stimulation.
plus they will devoid your entire area of rats before you know it
in the old days aboard ships at sea they had cats to exterminate all rodents on the ship to prevent spread of disease, and they did a pretty good job of it
Yep, get a cat.
Go to the shelter get one or two mean looking males.
Problem solved.
Cats don't eat what they kill usually, you'll still have to provide fresh food and water. Make sure they have warm shelter at night.
Just the presence of a cat is enough, so keep them in or out accordingly.
First, call the city! Get hold of Vermin Control and ask them what they are doing about it. Next make sure there are no open tears, or holes around the roof area of the house. If there are, use some aluminium foil to plug it up with. Even the smallest tears, they can enter through. Next, I would put out some Rat bait. In areas that your pets can't get to. Or your kids if you have any. Make sure your trash cans have lids that lock into place securely. Don't leave dog or cat food around for them. If you feed your pets outside, pick up the bowls when their finished.Don't leave them out. Ask your neighbours to do the same if they have pets .After the trash truck has picked up in your area, make sure they haven't left some spill-ed on the street by your house. (I know they do ) Sweep it up if they have. Try not to leave anything out that might tempt them into making themselves at home. Good Luck, I hate those things! I've heard terrible stories of rats eating fingers off of baby's! I would call the city so many times, they would be sick of me!Bye
