Council house.?
Question:As the council give you a payment to downsize your house i wondered if they give you anything to hand back your council house. I know they give you a deposit to put on a house in the UK but i want to live abroad.

I wouldn't have thought so. You can only get the money to downsize from a house to a flat with less bedrooms. My uncle is in a 2 bedroom house but because he wants a flat with 2 bedrooms they have told him he isn't entitled to the cash. He's steaming mad about it, so I can't see them giving you any money to take away from their purview.

Which council area do you live in? Ours dont give deposits for private houses.
i never knew they gave you a deposit to put on a house, if you want to move abroad then go for it, but a deposit on a house is prob not possible,

If any person no longer needs their council house they will I hope get no payment.
They will have been fortunate to have had subsidised accomodation at the expense of all those other council tax payers (like me) who never were and never will be so fortunate.
If you are able to give back your council house, then surely you could have the money to get a deposit on your house.
The council are helping you out to live in the UK, so they wouldn't give you money to live abroad - that would be pointless.
I am fully aware you are unlikely to give me best answer as I may have upset you, this is not meant intentionally, but instead to clearly state that the council is meant to look after it's people in it's area, not people wanting to move out of the area and country.
I do have to add, if you do feel you have the money to move abroad why are you living in a council place? I am right at the bottom of the list and have been for 4.5yrs...I have had to really scrimp and save to eventually get a house with my partner, which I am moving into next week, I got no help from the council what-so-ever, I would not even be able to dream of moving abroad so think yourself lucky!

Why would they give you money to surrender a tenancy? Think about it, who owns the house? You or the council? Why would they pay to take possession of their own house?
