What are those red cocoon looking bugs with "stinger" looking butts like a bee?

Question:I was digging in the garden and I found three of these shiny, fat red, no-headed, "stinger-butted" THINGS in the dirt. I was so disgusted I made my husband finish the job. So, what exactly are they?

Answers:
I'm fairly certain that the bug you are describing is a sawfly. The come from a red cocoon and do resemble bees, only with much larger stingers. have a look here: http://www.whatsthatbug.com//sawflies.ht...
