Found some ant traps called "Real Kill" at my Home Depot that worked really well. Just put them out and let the ants stream to it. They carry the poison back to the anthill and it kills the queen. We've used other brands to little effect, but this brand worked reall great and pretty much wiped out our ant issues.

Red--Hi--best answer your question is not to get them in the first place. You must be a messy kitchen cook. You spill things and then not clean it up--especially sugar items--sounds like you drink lots of Kool Aid. Leave the top open on the Sugar Pops cereal box. If they are tiny ants and travel in a line--sugar ants. Go to Kmart get ant traps and place them in the run. Leave it their--- the ants will carry the poison back to the nest and all will die. Big ants red or black should have an externinator on the job -- carpenter ants can destroy your house..
