Hydrangea plant?
Question:I bought my mother a hydrangea for Mother's Day this year (2007). When I bought it, it was a distinct purple color.
When she planted it in her flower garden, it turned a distinct pink color. This was baffling to me.
Can anyone explain this?

Most hydrangeas cycle through a couple of colors at least. For instance the white ones usually start out green & end up a khaki color. The soil also effects color.
They need acid in the soil. You can buy acid fertilizers at the garden stores. In Japan they are all blue due to the acid volcanic soil.
The ph balance in the soil changed.
The soil is more alkaline. Alkaline soil will cause the flowers to be pink rather than blue. Add some aluminum sulphate to the soil to reduce the alkaline. The hydrangea will still grow well in the alkaline soil, but the flowers will be pink.
