How do you get rid of spiders?
Question:I live in Ohio and have huge brown spiders in my house...my best guess is that they are wolf spiders...but honestly I never get that close!
I have kids and animals so I need something that is non toxic to them.
Does pepperment oil work?
Answers:
It's possible peppermint oil works. I've never seen spiders or their webs on my mint plants. There is also a insect and bug device that you could purchase at a hardware store. You plug it in and it's does the rest.
Or you could try this search that lists many

wal-mart carries a brand called HotShot that works really well, it's either direct spray or you can coat corners and suspected entry points and it keeps killing for about 2 months.
the active ingredients really aren't toxic to humans or animals at all due to the low potency necessary to defeat spiders.
you might also want to consider something called Delta Dust. readily available to order online usually. use it to dust your entire basement if you have one, and around the base of your home's exterior to control them outdoors
i can't vouch for it's toxicity, i'd expect it to be slightly harmful to small animals.
find yourself some prayingmatist non-.toxic ,feed on spider and other insects wont any one. some pet stores carry them also farm stores. or find a person who has some and catch some ...
I have always used dursban. It is not harmful to dogs but is to cats. Spiders are hard to kill by putting down a perimeter of insecticide as they do not clean themselves like other insects. Direct contact is your best bet. Spray in basement up along joist around perimeter and hit what you can. Do not use Ortho bug be gone.Never had any luck with it.
If the problem is in the basement, use a dehumidifier to cut down on moisture. Spiders and other insects thrive with moisture
I'll tell you what has worked for me.
First, you must do everything you can to eliminate any moisture from the basement. Fix any leaky plumbing, pile dirt around the foundation to make water run away, and extend gutter downspouts as far from the house as possible. Insects (spiders' food) and the spiders are attracted by moisture.
Next, last year I used "Ortho (Bug B Gone) MAX - Insect Killer for Lawns" in the shiny red bag from Home Depot to put a perimeter treatment around the house, then I also sprinkled some inside around the walls of my unfinished basement. It says to water it after putting it down so I even took a spray bottle of water and wet what I put inside the basement too. I did it last year and just went through a winter where I didn't see any spiders (we usually see a few in the winters) and this year I've only seen 4, compared to 40 (or more) last year and years before. I finished the bag off when re-applying for this year so I just went and bought another bag of the same stuff. I'm optimistic that I might have solved my spider problem. I mean I know I'll have some that wander in (and die I hope) but I hope to have a spider-free basement now (or soon). We got a dog recently and I have been a little concerned because it seems like he'll eat anything, but I've never seen him pay any attention to the stuff outside or inside so I'm thinking that it'll be ok for him to be around it.
Before this I'd tried fogging but I really don't think that ever did too much.
BTW, I had most all wolf spiders and very few other types. You might want to research and be positive about what type of spider you're up against. Along with Googleing (or Yahooing) for spider identification websites, you can also take your possibilities and search the names in Google Images for pictures.
