What should I ask / look for when buying an apartment?

If you have children, check the windows, make sure the locks work properly, and that they are not too low to the floor. Also check water pressure in the shower, cupboard and closet space, is there a fan in the bathroom cieling to allow moisture to escape if there is no window? Is the heat hot water or gas? (this makes a huge difference if you are paying your own utilities, especially since gas is so much more expensive than electricity) Read the lease carefully, and make sure that you can agree to the terms. Also, keep in mind that the landlord is supposed to put your security deposit into an account for you that usually, but not always, gains interest every year. Also take into consideration where the sun rises and sets, so that you know which rooms will be lighter in the morning and darker at night. And ask about washer and dryer connections. If there are none, and they don't provide a laundry room, you're truckin' it to the laundrymat every week. Good luck, I hope this was helpful to you.
