What kind of dirt is best for raising the grade around your house?

Question:I want to raise the grade around my house to help direct water away from the house when it rains, etc. I know there's all kinds of dirt out there, but what type is best for this type of application.?

how high are you raising the grade? most times as long as it less than 24'',we use good top soil, so grass and other plants grow well. and easyer to grade out smooth.
