What ant is orange/red with a stinger?
Question:I found an ant today that has a stinger two white dots on his hind secton. its hind secton has 3 rings on it before it reaches the stinger. the damn thing made all sorts of noise as i was holding it under water with a pen. its stinger came out when i held it under water and was trying to attack the pen. i dont know the difference in many ants and i dont know if this is a fire ant or close to it. our carpet is fairly new and it was made in Georgia USA. just wondering if this thing might have friends. fire ants string but i havent seen one in person. i know my father has a scar from being stung. anyways with info on ants or a web site that allows you to put in colors and defining features please let me know!

That is a Red Velvet Ant also called a "cow killer" because thier sting is so painful it is said they can kill a cow. What you have found is a female and they are really wingless wasps, not ants. put one in a mason jar and if you mess with it with a stick it will make weird noises and you will see it's stinger come out, the stinger is about 1/2" long, but be careful!! they are said to feel like getting shot by a gun if you get stung by one, people have gone into shock from it and had to be taking to the hospital! It is said to be the must painfull sting in nature! The females are loaners so the won't be any more around, we have them around my house which i have lived in for 19 years in that time i have seen only six in 19 years.
