Is anyone else getting big electric bills from EDF all of a sudden?
Question:Hi, i am trying to find out if anyone in the UK is all of a sudden getting big bills from EDF? Myself, my mum and a friend have all been getting rather expensive bills through recently.
We have all phoned EDF and given readings etc to find out why we are getting bigger bills, but not getting much sense out of the customer service team.
In my mums case she pays £50 a month on a contract, and just had a bill through for £600 saying she needs to pay or get cutt off. Shes a nurse and works long shifts, so shes never there!
And she lives by herself so you would think that £150 a quarter would be more than enough for 1 person, she doesn't use a lot of energy at all either...
I live in a 1 bedroom 'tiny' flat and don't use hardly any energy as hardly ever there also, but my quarterly bills are about £190!
We have all checked appliances etc. to see how we can cut down on any energy.
Whats going on are they out to rip us off? Do you think changing energy supplier would help?

They've obviously put their unit prices up (again!). Check your meter reading is correct and work out yourself how many units you've used to make sure your bill is correct, the price per unit is on there too.
On monthly payment plans it's a good idea to check they've got their estimate right, if you're using more units than you're paying for you can easily get whacked for a big bill when they realise. Alternatively, you may find out you're paying too much a month compared to your useage and get them to reduce your monthly amount.
Electricity costs seem to have gone up loads in the last 5 years.
Our bill in a house shared with 4 people 5 years ago was about £30-40 a quarter. Our bill for 2 people in a 1 bed flat was £80 a quarter last year, and in our latest flat it's gone up to £150 for 2 people, but that's probably because there's no gas so we're using electricity to heat water and cook which we weren't before.
Still EXTORTIONATE though. Will be checking out cheaper suppliers than EDF asap!

Its not just you guys. I have had the same problem with EDF. I think its across the country to be honest. I have actually switched suppliers as these guys have been known to just to up prices and most would probably pay without questioning. But I could guarantee you're probably not using any more electricity either.
If you get 2 minutes, go on one of the price comparison sites like www.uswitch.com, if I was you and see if you can get a better deal. Don't let these cowboys rip you off!

The bill has increased because the electricity provided by EDF comes from the continent, not UK. Therefore the price will vary depending of the inflation on electricity. The best way to avoid being ripped off is, on receipt of the bill (probably *estimated*), is to ask for a revised bill with the current reading. I found that often got me 30% off each time.
Contact energy watch on 08459060708 they will deal with your complaint swiftly. I have dealt with energy watch in the past and they are brilliant. They contact your energy provider on your behalf and sort the problem out without you having to do anything. Good luck. You are getting ripped off!
I signed up with EDF back in April 2007 and when I got my first bill it was more than I ever paid for, for a quarter with my old company so within 10 minutes I got in touch with my previous supplier and signed back up with them. No way are EDF going to rip me off.
If I was you, I would change supplier. EDF are thieves all they want it to take your money. They sit in the office rubbing there hands plotting ways of stealing from us
