How do i catch garter snakes?

Garter snakes are fairly common in areas with water. They are diurnal (active during daylight hours) and can be found in almost any area. They eat frogs, so if you can find frogs you will probably find garter snakes.
If you're not specifically looking for garters, the best way to catch them is to pin them with your foot (be very gentle so you don't crush them). If you have a handkerchief or other piece of cloth, you can cover the snake's head with it and just pick it up. A newly caught snake will often bite, but the snake is not venomous and the bite is only as small scratch. However, if you prefer not to get bitten, use a piece of cloth.
You don't use bait to attract snakes, although they will be attracted to places where food is available.
In my opinion, they are best left alone.
They eat mainly worms, grubs, slugs and the like. They do so much more good out in the garden than they would in a glass case in your bedroom.
The only "bait" that will likely draw them out is the Sun. As cold blooded creatures, they need the sun to warm them up. You will often find them on a warm rock in a sunny spot or hiding under one when it's cloudy.
If you plan to keep on as a pet, please get a good book on their care first. You'll have to buy an expensive heat lamp, buy or dig worms to feed it, give it a mineral suppliment so it doesn't get bone disease, etc.
Maybe a better idea would be to set up a nice spot that would attract them so that you could just observe it in your own back yard. It's a lot less work that way.
First of all, don't step on the snake as suggested above. That's just a bad way of catching snakes and could result in you getting bitten by a venomous snake mistaken for a garter snake. Second, don't catch garter snakes unless it's for a good reason ie relocation. Third, they are pretty much everywhere in North America and there's no way to attract them with bait. Finally, they emit a foul musk from their anal gland when they are threatened which you get on your hands...not desirable.
