I have 3 openings on my pool filter valve, "pump", "return" and "waste." What is "waste" for?

Question:I just moved into a home with a pool, but have never maintained one before.

Answers:
The "waste" port is the discharge line. It will be where the water comes out when backwashing (cleaning out) the filter. The water will come out of this opening when the valve is in the "backwash" postion. (Never move the handle with the pump running...)

The waste should be for flushing the filter. However, if you are smart.and I assume you are.go to your local pool supply place (with a water sample) and have them teach you how to maintain it. It can be a very VERY costly mistake if you do not. How do I know?? Been there/done that. ;)
