Running the A/C with a Window Open?
Question:I came home from work to find my roomate had opened the bedroom window and placed a box fan in the window, facing outwards to get rid of the smell of smoke in that room. Meanwhile, the A/C is running.
Can someone please give me a scientific explanation why this is WASTING energy. He won't listen to me. **Grrr**
Isn't it in fact sucking cold air out the window and making the A/C run longer to keep the right temperature in the house?
Answers:
absolutley it wastes energy. having the window open makes the a/c work extra hard to keep the room at the requested temperature.
besides wasting energy, it could break or ruin the a/c unit. if it constantly has to work double time to cool the humid, warm air he is letting it, the a/c unit will freeze up (under the front cover, there will be a thick sheet of ice) and you will have to defrost it/thaw it out.
good luck getting this thru his thick head! lol
that all depends on how long he had the window open and how big the house is. but in a normal house a couple minutes to get smoke out of the house shouldnt be that bad, all day would be a problem
Kick The Ignorant Goof Out...Or Let Him Pay A Larger Chunk Of The Electric...Tell Him To Think Of The Money He would Save Recycling The Smoke He's Blowing Out The Window..lolololol
It is wasting energy because the a/c is working harder to keep the area cool, when it's not possible because of the window being open. It's not only a waste of energy but it's a good way to fry your air conditioner.
Air conditioners are designed to work in specific spaces (square footage I mean) so as long as you have one that is sufficient for your space, you're off to a good start. By keeping the window open for more than a few minutes, the a/c compressor is working overtime trying to pump enough refrigerant through its system to cool the area. If he keeps doing this, the condensor is going to freeze up and when that happens, you have to shut it off and let it defrost. My logic says that this beats the entire purpose of having an air conditioner right?
this will waste energy if he has the door to his room open and is drawing cool air from the rest of the home. inform this guy to close his door and to close the vent that supplies the a/c to his room and run the fan all he wants to. that will keep the rest of the home cool and will help him with his smoke problem.
