Help me identify a flowering plant.?

Question:I am sorry I don't have a picture I can post, but the plant appears to be some sort of a bromeliad. It has tough leaves with "saw briar" edges that appear to come off the base of the plant in a rosette.n The flower stem comes up out of the center of the rosette, but it doesn't look like any bromeliad I have ever seen, it reminds me of the flower of a bird of paradise. It is a bright purplish-red with smallish "bullet shaped" pods hanging from the center of the flower, they are the same purplish-red with a small ring of yellow and dark purple tips. I haven't noticed any scent.
